Which Course?

Which qualification can I undertake?

1. Are you 19 years of age or over?

* Yes – continue
* No – you must be 19 or over to undertake any of the teacher training qualifications

2. Are you currently teaching?

* Yes – continue
* No – you must be delivering teaching to undertake either the Certificate or Diploma in Education and Training – this can be either in a paid employed or voluntary role. You could start with the preparatory qualification – the L3 Award in Education and Training (AET) and continue with either the Certificate or Diploma once you have secured some teaching hours – these hours can be either paid or voluntary.

3. Can you work to at least a level 2 standard in English and Maths proven either by qualification or work experience?

* Yes – continue
* No – you will need to address your English and Maths skills before undertaking any of these qualifications.

4. Are your learners 14 years of age or over?

* Yes – continue
* No – To undertake either the Certificate or Diploma you must be teaching learners who are 14 years or over.

5. Do you teach vocational subjects?

* Yes – continue
* No – your teaching must be on vocational subjects (i.e. not the national curriculum)

6. Do you primarily teach groups of learners (i.e. 3 or more learners together)?

* Yes – you should be able to undertake the L5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) as long as you will be able to provide evidence of teaching at least 100 hours over the duration of the DET programme
* No – you should be able to undertake the L4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) as long as you will be able to provide evidence of teaching at least 30 hours over the duration of the CET programme
