There are three levels of teacher training qualifications:
Level 3 Award in Education and Training (12 credits)
This introductory, knowledge-based teaching qualification has no minimum teaching practice requirement, meaning that it can be undertaken by individuals who are not already in a teaching role. This award replaced the old L3/4 PTLLS.
Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (36 credits)
This qualification is suitable for individuals who want a qualification which focuses on practical teaching, are currently teaching and want to have their experience and practice accredited. It is an ‘in service’ qualification designed for those working as teachers/trainers. It may be possible for pre-service teachers/trainers (defined as those who are not formally contracted as teachers/trainers) to also complete this qualification. All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 30 hours of teaching. This certificate replaced the old L4 CTLLS.
Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (PGCE, CertEd) (120 credits)
This qualification provides training for those individuals who hold a teaching role with an extensive range of teaching or training responsibilities, including those in more than one context. It is an ‘in service’ qualification designed for those working as teachers/trainers. It may be possible for pre-service teachers/trainers (defined as those who are not formally contracted as teachers/trainers) to also complete this qualification, however all candidates, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 100 hours of teaching. This diploma replaced the old L5 DTLLS.
The new 2014 professional standards for teachers and trainers in England define the professional requirements of teachers, trainers and tutors of post 16 learners, and underpin good teaching practice in the sector. This includes describing the skills, knowledge, values and attributes of those individuals.
The intended audience for these standards are teachers and trainers of post-16 learners working in further education colleges (excluding sixth form colleges), the community, commercial and charitable organisations, industry, the armed and uniformed services, prisons/offender learning and other public sector organisations and their employers.
